Workshop on Climate Change and Tourism in the Saint Jean Cap Ferrat Marine Protected Area

Jul 22, 2025

A collaborative workshop addressing the pressing challenges of climate change in tourism took place on July 2nd in Ville de Beaulieu-sur-Mer, focusing on the Cap Ferrat Marine Protected Area. The event gathered local stakeholders including municipal representatives from Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, as well as officials from the Port and Maritime Activities Department of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropole.

Highlighting Climate Risks in a Fragile Ecosystem

The session was built around the recent findings of a study conducted by Setec International, which identified rising air and sea surface temperatures as one of the most urgent tourism-related climate threat in the area. These changes are already impacting biodiversity, while also affecting the well-being of residents and the visitor experience.

Participants were briefed on the study’s key observations, which served as a basis for interactive discussions in smaller workshop groups.

The main current issue raised, and subsequently discussed in workshops, was that of rising air and surface water temperatures and their consequences for biodiversity, residents and tourists. The participants then reflected on the objectives and actions for adapting to this hazard, to feed into the development of the next action plan.
