The first in-person meeting for the Interreg Euro-MED NaTour4CChange project took place from 17-19 June 2024, in Zagreb, Croatia, hosted by the project leader, the Institute for Tourism (IFT). This significant event brought together ten project partners from six Mediterranean countries, united in one mission to test solutions that enhance the resilience of touristic destinations with natural value, and to combat and adapt to climate change.
The first day kicked off with a comprehensive overview of the project and its working packages (WP), focusing on the current state-of-play as we approach the 1st semester. Attendees were updated on the survey on best practices for climate action in coastal tourism, accompanied by a lively discussion. Key topics included external project communications and the establishment of the Regional Coordination Units, covering their composition and scope. The day wrapped up with sessions on the selection of pilot destinations and forming a Tourism Climate Action Taskforce in each of them.
The second day included sessions on drafting regional and destination tourism climate strategies and plans. The discussion then shifted to defining enabling conditions for tourism climate action, complemented by a methodological framework review for assessing coastal tourism issues related to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Interactive exchanges followed the presentation of selected pilot destinations. The afternoon featured insights on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) concepts and practices, key takeaways, and next steps. The day concluded with a field visit to Maksimir Park, a protected area in the city of Zagreb.
The final day focused on revising and approving time planning for various aspects of the project. Discussions then centered on pilot destinations and forthcoming activities. Future reporting activities and meetings were planned before concluding with the international panel the XXIII ‘Tourism Discussions’ on the topic: “Tourism in the Mediterranean: Challenges, Policies, Management, and Innovative Responses”. Representatives of IUCN-Med, CPMR, HSPN and the Region of Andalucia conversed on various topics, focusing on the implementation of NbSs and the engagement of local communities and tourism stakeholders to sustainability and restoration actions. The event ended with a banquet, fostering further networking among the participants.
The atmosphere throughout the meeting was vibrant and enthusiastic, and the strong sense of collaboration among partners set the stage for impactful initiatives ahead!
