PROJECT RESULTS

d 1.3.1 - Survey Report on Best Practices on climate action in coastal tourism destinations in the Mediterranean

The first report of the NaTour4CChange project, a European initiative funded by Interreg Euro-MED, serves as a foundational document for all future project activities. It establishes a comprehensive understanding of how Mediterranean coastal destinations are addressing climate change challenges and highlights key opportunities for enhancing resilience.
The report synthesizes insights from questionnaire, consultations and literature review, offering an overview of current climate actions in the Mediterranean tourism sector, an in-depth analysis of gaps, barriers, and opportunities for advancing adaptation and mitigation strategies, and a showcase of best practices identified through research and stakeholder consultations. These practices present tangible, replicable solutions that can inspire decision-makers and local communities across the region and especially the NaTou4CC’s partners.
This report provides a critical starting point for subsequent project activities, supporting efforts to foster a more climate-resilient future for Mediterranean destinations. Download the report to explore the path toward sustainable coastal tourism in the face of climate change.

D.1.4.1-2 - Methodological frameworks for Regions and Destinations for assessing the main coastal tourism related issues concerning Climate Change

This report of the NaTour4CChange project, coordinated by Plan Bleu as part of the Interreg Euro-MED initiative, introduces two comprehensive methodological frameworks designed to assess and enhance climate resilience in Mediterranean coastal tourism.
This document provides actionable, evidence-based guidelines tailored for both Regional and Destination levels, as project partners. These frameworks establish clear criteria and indicators to evaluate tourism’s contribution to climate change, as well as the sector’s adaptation and mitigation efforts. At the regional level, the methodology integrates climate action into broader adaptation and mitigation strategies, offering a pathway for developing Regional Climate Strategies, the next mains project’s deliverables. At the destination level, it provides tools to identify vulnerabilities, assess risks, and implement targeted actions to enhance sustainability and resilience.
The report also includes a step-by-step guide for assessing climate change impacts and conducting vulnerability mapping, along with practical recommendations for implementing the proposed criteria and indicators. It offers a critical foundation for fostering integrated climate strategies in coastal tourism, inspiring stakeholders across the Mediterranean to address climate challenges collaboratively and effectively. Climate action planning toolkit (activities 1.5-1.6)

The Climate Action Planning Toolkit is a practical guide developed by the CPMR and its external experts, The Travel Foundation, to support tourism stakeholders in transitioning towards sustainable and climate-conscious practices. It provides guidance on developing Climate Action Plans for tourism, offering best practices, case studies, and methodologies to integrate climate resilience into tourism strategies. The toolkit is intended for local authorities, policymakers, tourism businesses, and sustainability professionals looking to create tourism models that address climate challenges while enhancing the resilience of destinations. It serves as a valuable resource for those committed to shaping a more sustainable future for coastal and nature-based tourism.

D1.7.1 - NbS for Coastal Destinations Climate Action manual (activity 1.7)

The NbS for Coastal Destinations Climate Action Manual provides practical guidelines for Mediterranean coastal tourism destinations to design and implement Nature-based Solutions (NbS) as part of an Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) approach to Climate Change. Building on the experience of the project, it supports the six pilot destinations in developing destination-level tourism climate action plans that address local climate challenges through evidence-based, long-term planning. The guidelines offer a structured methodology to identify climate risks, select appropriate NbS, and enhance climate resilience, while also serving as a transferable tool for wider application across coastal destinations in the Mediterranean region, promoting nature-positive and equitable local economies. Τhe document was developed by IUCN Med and was authored by NBSCLIMATE.

regional coordination unit status report

The Regional Coordination Unit (RCU) Status Report, developed under Activity 2.2, summarises the establishment and role of the RCUs within the NaTour4CChange project. The 5 partners testing activities at a regional level, supported by the CPMR, foster a formally established inter-departmental coordination unit bringing together key regional departments including at least the tourism and environment /climate change departments, to define an integrated “Regional Tourism Climate Strategy/Plan” in a joint and collaborative manner to jointly develop integrated Regional Tourism Climate Strategies. The report documents the preparatory steps, formalisation process, and follow-up actions undertaken to ensure regular operation and long-term continuity of the RCUs.
