Exploring NaTour4CChange Results on MapX: Mapping Tourism and Climate Challenges Across the Mediterranean

May 26, 2026

MapX is an online, open access and geospatial data tool designed to manage, analyze, visualize and promote existing dataset on natural resources and the environment developped by the UNEP-GRID Geneva and used by the Plan Bleu Observatory. Thanks to its interface, the MapX interface allows users to view thematic geospatial data provided by various data providers and funded project results.

As part of the NaTour4CChange project the partners were called upon to identify the main climate change pressures that affect the tourism sector and related activities in the regions and destinations. The results of these assessments can now be found on MapX (under the “WESR:MEDITERRANEAN” project), where users can access cartographic representations of the diagnoses, respectively for each project pilot site.

The MapX technology enables users all over the world to view and interact with high-resolution, geospatial datasets based on the region and destination assessments. The map viewer is organized by projects, linked to a specific theme, convention, geographic location, or institution with the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development as backbones. For each project view an associated caption and a summary explaining the data being displayed appears when selected. Through the toolbox and the interface navigation, the users have access to a variety of features; from URL mirror assistant and the option to delete cached data to zooming in and identification of geospatial elements. Finally, metadata are also accessible, enabling a deeper understanding of the dataset and associated data providers.
